Overview
Founded in Portland in 2024, Tierra Libre Run began as a small run club among friends who wanted to see more representation on the trails. What started locally has grown into a movement: a community-driven nonprofit dedicated to advancing trail running through representation, mentorship, and access.
Through programs like the BIPOC Athlete Fund—which provides fully sponsored race entries—and community events that bring runners together, Tierra Libre Run creates pathways for athletes of color to thrive in trail running. By building community and breaking down barriers, they’re making space for more diverse voices, stories, and leaders on the trails.
Philosophy
Trail running should be for everyone, but barriers—financial, cultural, and systemic—too often prevent people of color from feeling at home in the sport. Tierra Libre Run exists to change that.
Our philosophy is rooted in six core values:
Representation — Elevating diverse voices and stories in trail running.
Community — Building authentic relationships through shared miles and support.
Access — Removing financial barriers with funded race opportunities.
Mentorship — Guiding, learning, and paying it forward.
Land Respect — Honoring Indigenous heritage and protecting the trails we run.
Growth — Meeting runners where they are and helping them reach their goals.
By living these values, Tierra Libre Run is shaping a trail culture where more runners not only belong but thrive.
