Overview
Step into one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Pacific Northwest, where trails weave through the blast zone of Mount St. Helens. Backcountry Rise is more than a race—it is a journey through resilience and raw beauty. Imagine running past sapphire lakes, across ridgelines with sweeping views of the Cascade volcanoes, and through valleys bursting with wildflowers.
The race weekend features three distances: the epic 50K and Half Marathon on Saturday and the adventurous 20 miler on Sunday. Each course offers something unique, from the classic Coldwater Lake loop to big climbs and thrilling descents that test your grit and reward you with jaw-dropping scenery. Wildlife sightings are common—mountain goats, elk, and soaring raptors may be your trail companions. Whether you run, crew, or cheer from the sidelines, this race delivers a full weekend of community, celebration, and mountain adventure.

Course Description
The Backcountry Rise courses take you deep into the Mt. Margaret backcountry on the north side of Mount St. Helens. The terrain is rugged and raw, carved from the 1980 eruption, with exposed ridges, volcanic rock, and rolling wildflower meadows. Expect challenging climbs, technical descents, and unforgettable views of the crater, Spirit Lake, and the surrounding Cascade peaks.
50K runners face a demanding journey with significant elevation, long stretches between aid, and the need for strong mountain-running experience. The 20 miler blends steady climbs with ridgeline traverses and a fast descent to the finish. The Half Marathon loops around Coldwater Lake, combining gentle lakeside trails with bursts of climbing that make it a classic favorite.
