Oregon's prettiest & best supported 100-Miler

Oregon's prettiest & best supported 100-Miler

Overview

The Lastest Not Fastest is a last-person-standing style race in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge. This unique endurance event challenges runners to complete a 4.13-mile loop every hour on the hour; run fast and bank rest time, or run steady and hang on as long as possible.

You don’t need speed to win, just grit, strategy, and the determination to keep showing up. With stunning views of the Columbia River and the Oregon side from Hamilton Island, this is as scenic as a backyard ultra gets.

Course Description

The 4.13M loop course circles Hamilton Island in the Columbia River Gorge. It begins with a stretch alongside the Columbia River, rolls into shaded forest near the Bonneville Dam, and then climbs the course’s one “big hill”—a short 30ft ascent. From there, runners loop around the edge of North Bonneville, cross fields, and return along a trail perched just above the river. The terrain is mostly flat, with only 103ft of gain per loop, making speed management and recovery the real challenges.

Expect sunrise glows over the river, wide-open skies, and plenty of encounters with hikers, fishermen, and locals sharing the trails. Every loop starts together, every hour, on the hour. Miss the cut? You’re out. Keep running until there’s only one.

Key Highlights

  • 4.13-mile loop around Hamilton Island

  • Elevation Gain per loop is ~103 ft

  • Packed dirt and gravel trails

  • Flat terrain with one small hill (30 ft elevation)

  • Scenic river views and forested sections

  • Historic markers along the route

  • Runners must start each loop at the top of the hour—no early or late starts allowed

Logistics

Hamilton Island is 46 miles east of Portland, Oregon, about a 75-minute drive.

Driving Directions
Parking

There are designated parking areas on Hamilton Island. Crew and solo runners can set up directly near the start/finish area. Overflow parking for crew and visitors is available west of the staging area. No overnight parking is allowed Friday before the race.

Lodging

North Bonneville and nearby towns offer lodging options. Portland is also close enough for a day trip. Camping and car camping are not permitted at Hamilton Island.

Aid Stations

The single aid station is located at the start/finish area. Runners return here every loop for access to Precision Fuel gels, Precision Hydration electrolyte drink, water, soft drinks, PB&Js, potato chips, pickles, gummy bears, Oreos, fruit, Fig Newtons, M&Ms, and more. Hot foods, including veggie and meat broth, are available at night, with heartier real food offered from 6:00PM onward. Because the format loops back to the same spot every hour, runners can also set up their own mini aid stations with favorite supplies.

Race Requirements

Runners must be prepared for repeated hourly starts and self-management of pacing, rest, and nutrition. Prior ultramarathon experience is recommended but not required.
